Thoughts on outdoor portraits

Long ago, it was thought that a “professional” photo shoot meant that you’d have to go into a huge studio and pose awkwardly in front of the camera.

Nowadays, it’s just as easy to go outside and pose awkwardly in front of the camera.

The issue with being outside is that there isn’t much control, so shoots have to be planned, and if the photographer is bringing lighting to control how the subject looks, it’s an extra thing to consider.

Recently, I’ve been experimenting with outdoor portraits with something called hi speed shutter sync, in which an incredibly fast shutter produces a dark background but the subject is lit properly from the flash.
